Dialect Behavioural Therapy (DBT)

What is DBT?

Dialect Behavioural Therapy (DBT) is a type of cognitive behavioural therapy that provides comprehensive treatment for people who have self-destructive behaviours, extreme personalities, and other mental illnesses that threaten their safety. DBT is designed for high-risk and hard-to-treat patients. It teaches people how to cope with life situations and how to change negative and unhealthy behaviours into healthy ones.

How does DBT work?

Stages of DBT:

  • Stage 1: The counsellor will first treat the most self-destructive behaviours, such as suicide or self-harm.

  • Stage 2: The counsellor begins to teach you quality-of-life skills, such as emotion regulation,  distress tolerance, focusing on the present, and how to ask for what you want or need by respecting others. Patients need to do homework and practice to apply what they learned.

  • Stage 3: Skills of improving relationships with family and friends are taught. The counsellor also helps you to build self-esteem and self-confidence in this stage. Homework and practice are also needed.

  • Stage 4: The counsellor helps you to strengthen your skills of building more relationship connections and promoting more joy in life.

How long is the therapy?

DBT is a long-term therapy. The length of DBT usually ranges from 6 months to a year, depending on the type of situation, the severity of your mental health conditions, how quickly you make the process, and how much support you receive from your family and friends. Every person requires a different length of DBT. But try not to get scared of the lengthy time of the treatment. Your mental health and quality of life are more important than anything.  Seek help for borderline personality disorders at Nuway today.
